POP homePurposeValues Compass

CHAPTER 04 · PURPOSE COMPANION

A compass for
your next decision.

When pressure gets quieter, what will guide you?

You don’t need a plan for your whole life to choose a direction. Begin with one real decision, four honest questions, and a step that reflects what matters to you.

Explore the four questions

Bring a journal or your own notes. Take the time you need.

ORIENTATION BEFORE MOMENTUM

A choice can bring relief and still leave you wondering what comes next. This compass is a way to consider your values, other people, your responsibilities, and what is already worth keeping. It won’t promise an easy answer. It gives you questions to return to.

Non-negotiable

“What value am I unwilling to betray just to make this decision easier?”

Start with the value you want to honor: honesty, integrity, or a promise you made to yourself. Name what matters before weighing which option earns the most approval.

Effect

“If our roles were reversed, would I respect the way this choice treats the other person?”

Consider the people affected by your decision. Respect can include a clear boundary, an honest explanation, or a thoughtful no. It doesn’t require pleasing everyone.

Sphere of control

“What part of this decision actually belongs to me?”

Your words, preparation, effort, and response belong to you. You cannot choose another person’s reaction or guarantee the outcome. Put your next action where you have a part to play.

Worth preserving

“What good is already here that I do not want fear to make me overlook?”

Notice what you want to carry forward: a relationship, a helpful routine, or a strength you have developed. Gratitude can help you see what remains valuable; it does not ask you to stay somewhere harmful.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

One value.
One honest action.

Choose a decision you need to make this week. Keep it small enough to work with today.

  1. Name the decision.

Write one sentence: “The decision in front of me is…” You are choosing a next step, not settling your entire future.

  2. Answer all four questions.

Write a few honest words for N, E, S, and W. Then compare the options in front of you with those answers.

  3. Choose the value to act on.

Complete this sentence in your own notes:

“The value I need most right now is…”

  4. Give that value an action.

Choose one action within your control that expresses it. The lesson invites you to take that action within 24 hours.

AN EVERYDAY EXAMPLE · FICTIONAL

“Can you help this weekend?”

You want to support a friend, but you already promised yourself time to rest. Here is one way someone might use the compass.

Non-negotiable
Be honest about what I can offer.
Effect
Give my friend a clear answer early enough to plan.
Sphere of control
I can choose my words and offer a specific amount of time. I can’t choose their response.
Worth preserving
Our friendship, and the rest I have made room for.

ONE POSSIBLE ACTION

“I can help for an hour on Saturday morning. I’m keeping the rest of the weekend free.”

Someone else’s honest answer might be different. The practice is to find a response you can respect and follow through on.

CARRY SOMETHING FORWARD

Return to your compass.
Then take the next step.

You can come back to these questions when your circumstances change or you notice yourself drifting. There is room to reconsider and realign.
